Amazake Coffee
Give your usual amazake a grown-up twist with a coffee flavor! The natural sweetness of amazake pairs perfectly with coffee. If you don’t stir enough, the coffee may not dissolve and can settle at the bottom, so stir well from the bottom before drinking.
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Servings: 1 serving
-
Ingredients
- Amazake (non-alcoholic sweet fermented rice drink; specifically “Koujiya Satomura Amazake made with rice and rice koji” if using the same product): 150 ml (5 fl oz)
- Instant coffee: 1–2 tsp
- Hot water (only if making it iced): 1 Tbsp (15 ml)
- Marshmallows (optional, to float on top): as desired
-
Preparation
- Warm the amazake in the microwave. As a guide, heat at 500W for about 50 seconds. (Remove any lid seal/film and any straw before microwaving.)
- Pour the warmed amazake into a mug, add the instant coffee, and stir very well until fully dissolved. Warming the mug beforehand is recommended.
- For an iced version: Dissolve the instant coffee in 1 Tbsp (15 ml) hot water, then pour in chilled amazake and stir well.
Notes
Amazake is a sweet Japanese drink made from fermented rice and rice koji. Many store-bought versions are non-alcoholic; check the label if you are avoiding alcohol.
